GENERAL ELECTRIC MATERIALS AND PROCESS ENGINEERING GROUP
GE’s Materials and Process Engineering Group in Schenectady has relied on Friedman Fisher Associates to provide electrical, mechanical, and plumbing design guidance for several laboratory projects in Building 40. These include two thermal spray cells with extensive use of hydrogen and natural gas; Class I and II Division 1 powder-coat and electrostatic paint booths; a “belchfire” system for applying high temperature ceramic coatings; gas leak detection, fire alarm, ventilation loss, and other safety systems; and an outdoor gas storage plant to support the various projects. Over a period of years, new electrical and mechanical infrastructures were designed to accommodate the growing needs of these laboratories. Elsewhere in the Schenectady plant, Friedman Fisher Associates has designed and/or managed projects including the roll out of GE’s digital broadcast network throughout the various buildings, robotic installations, new locker rooms and toilet facilities, office lighting and ventilation, energy conservation studies, relocation of several tool shops and manufacturing groups within the plant (as well as between the plant and other owned facilities), unique facilities for brazing, electron-beam and induction welding, a carpenter shop, dust collection systems, hazardous area classification and construction, passenger elevators, computer rooms, and custom ventilation systems that safely and efficiently handle the distinctive requirements of heavy industrial atmospheres.
