SCHENECTADY COUNTY - Various Boiler Plant Upgrades

Schenectady County

Overview
Over the last 10 years Friedman Fisher Associates has worked on many County buildings and has designed new boiler plants for all the major County buildings as these plants have aged and needed replacement.

Schenectady County Courthouse
The boiler plant serving the courthouse and the office building was replaced with new low pressure steam boilers. Two new H.B. Smith field erected cast iron sectional boilers were designed for this basement boiler plant. The units are nominally 110 Boiler Horsepower and the burners are Power Flame. The boiler feed unit was also replaced with this project, as was a number of heat exchangers and pumps.

Schenectady County Jail (Old Section)
The old section of the jail was served from a basement steam boiler. As the old unit was installed with no service room and did not meet the minimum code required clearances FFA worked with the County to secure an adjacent storage room and removed the wall separating it fro the existing boiler room. With this additional space we were able to install two smaller boilers and give the jail both new equipment and redundancy. Two H.B. Smith cast iron sectional boilers with dual fueled Power Flame gas/oil burners were installed in the new boiler room.

Schenectady County Jail (New Section)
The new section of the jail was served from a 8 modular condensing boilers. Four units served the heating hot eater needs and 4 served the domestic hot water for the jail. Problems surfaced from the original installation (designed by others) with reliability and performance. FFA was commissioned to study the situation and recommend a plan of action.

Eventually it was determined that the 8 year old units would have to be replaced. We have designed a replacement boiler plant using four 60 BHP packaged copper fin tube boilers to replace the old system. The project has a difficult phasing scenario included in the design to assure no downtime for the facility. Construction is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2003.

Glendale Nursing Home
The boiler plant serving the 528-bed County Nursing Home was completely upgraded. The plant consists of three 150 Boiler Horsepower hot water Sellers boilers serving numerous heating systems in the four wing complex. The units are fired on natural gas and utilize a unique single pass fire tube design.
