COLUMBIA GREENE COMMUNITY COLLEGE
|
This project was a large and complicated renovation and reconstruction project of over 150,000 square feet. The construction was performed in a fully occupied and programmed building. Two courtyards in the main academic building were in-filled with new construction and this additional space was in part used for swing space. Over the course of approximately 2 years, the project was constructed in over 18 defined phases. Additional new construction included an 8,400 s.f. Central Services Building to house the print shop and maintenance garage.
One highlight of this project was an innovative laboratory HVAC system using a heat recovery chiller and variable air volume control system. The chiller unit is piped to the geothermal heat exchanger and can provide either chilled water or heating hot water as is required for the season. This two-pipe change over system allows a 100% outside air unit to supply the laboratory air needs in proportion to the use of the fume hoods and classrooms maximizing energy efficiency. The entire mechanical system is controlled through a new DDC central energy management system.
The Central Services Building is served from a separate geothermal system and uses radiant under-slab heating for the garage and loading dock areas. This has made serving of the snow plows and other equipment in the winter a comfortable and safe experience of the owner.
The entire Main Academic Building received new high efficiency lighting supported by entirely new primary switchgear and distribution equipment. A new emergency generator was installed as a part of the project. A new fire alarm system was designed and installed throughout the building.
