The COLLEGE OF SAINT ROSE
St. Joseph’s Hall Renovation
|
Saint Josephs Hall on the campus of The College of Saint Rose was originally constructed as a residence for nuns. Over many years, the building has been converted to faculty offices and also houses the college's main computer operations, a large auditorium and a chapel. This project's renovation scope includes all areas of the building (40,000 Sq. Ft.) and calls for consolidating many faculty and administration functions into the building. The resulting project incorporates a new addition that creates a handicap accessible lobby, new elevator and toilet rooms.
The building's original construction and extremely limited floor-to-floor heights were a major challenge in designing the mechanical and electrical systems for this renovation. Floor to floor heights were so restricted that in many areas less than 8 inches of space is available above the ceilings. System selection was driven by these and other considerations and resulted in the specification of a water source heat pump system with a dedicated outside air ventilation system. This mechanical system selection allowed for the installation of floor mounted console heat pumps in many of the offices and ventilation ductwork was coordinated to fit between light fixtures, conduit, piping and structure. All new power distribution, fire alarm and lighting for the building is being provided. The highly coordinated mechanical and electrical design was interference checked in the design phase.
The ventilation system is highlighted by the use of combined air to air heat recovery and water source heat pump units. These roof mounted packages provide conditioned air to the spaces without adding any additional load to the heat pump units. As the only ducted air in the building is for 100% fresh air and exhaust, the ductwork sizes were small enough to fit into the space available.
The building design included a new sprinkler system throughout the building. Specialty FM-200 gas fire protection systems and pre-action sprinkler systems were designed for the computer and UPS areas.
